MSHDA Family Self-Sufficiency Program

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program provides for coordination of local, community-based resources that promote economic independence for families living in assisted housing. Let yourself envision a future where you are in control.

Mobility Gift Cards for Employment

SMCAA currently has an assistance program available for Berrien County residents who need extra support to obtain and/or maintain employment. If an eligible individual needs gas money to pay for an emergency to get to work, then he/she may apply for a gas card.

Eligible individuals must be a Resident of Berrien County, provide proof of need for mobility funding to obtain/maintain employment, and have a household income at or below 200% FPL.

COVID Aid, Relief, and Economic Security

In an effort to respond to the needs of Berrien, Cass and Van Buren County residents during and following the coronavirus pandemic, SMCAA has implemented services through the CARES Relief and Recovery Services, which comes from federal funding by the CARES Act. Specifically, CARES may provide residents with financial assistance towards vehicle repairs or vehicle payments.

Eligible clients are 200% of Poverty, must provide proof of financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and receive benefits through MDHHS.

City of Benton Harbor Summer Youth Employment Program

**Currently Inactive**

The City of Benton Harbor's SYEP introduces low-to-moderate income youth to the pathway to self-sufficiency by offering a sustainable opportunity for job training and employment. Nearly 40 city youth will participate in this program during Summer 2022.

City residents interested in learning more or wanting to enroll their youth in this program may call the City of Benton Harbor at 269-927-0480. 

Whirlpool Corporation Appliance Donation

**Currently Inactive**

The 2022 event was held on July 22, 2022. 

 

In 2021, SMCAA provided new kitchen appliances to 10 households in Berrien County through collaboration with Whirlpool Corporation and United Way of Southwest Michigan. In 2022, 6 households received new appliances.
