GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A food drive in the Lakeshore community is closing in on three decades of feeding West Michigan.
The Stuff A Truck food drive officially kicked off its 29th food drive on Monday, Nov. 18.
Briana Sallis of United Way of Southwest Michigan said that the drive couldn’t have come at a better time, with the loss of SNAP benefits, inflation and grocery prices heightening food insecurity.
“We are seeing families that are struggling to just get food on the table,” she said. “So this is a perfect timely event. It’s really a community group effort.”
A variety of organizations are contributing, including the Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency, 94.9 WSJM and 99.9 Y Country. Sallis said that the drive is accepting a variety of items.
“We are looking for non-perishable food items, so think coffee, soup, baking goods,” she said. “We’re also looking for personal hygiene items as well. Soaps, detergents, shampoo, conditioners and baby products. So, diapers, wipes, things of that nature.”
Sallis praised the work of the SMCAA and said that being able to provide any additional resources to those in need in West Michigan makes a difference.
“I think the impact is huge,” she said. “And really our role at United Way is to bolster the efforts at the MCAA. They do such amazing work, they’re on the ground every day, so we just want to do what we can to really support the Tri-County area, Van Buren, Berrien, Cass counties and do what we can to help families in need.”
People are welcome to stop by Roger’s Foodland in St. Joseph to donate food or personal hygiene items. The location will be open until Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Donations can also be made online.
